Funding for Climate Change Adaptation: Over €350,000 Granted to Burgenlandkreis by Willingmann

Saxony-Anhalt, a region known for experiencing an increasing number of heat days and tropical nights, is taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by climate change. The "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" program, a part of the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE), is a significant part of these efforts.

The program, which received funding of 35 million euros from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is a continuation of previous climate change adaptation efforts in the Burgenlandkreis. Since 2002, over 50 million euros has been spent on more than 20 construction measures in this region.

Climate Minister Professor Dr. Armin Willingmann emphasized the importance of adapting to climate change and preparing for weather extremes such as heavy rain, flooding, and heat waves. The "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" program includes investments in various climate change adaptation measures such as heat action plans, mobile flood protection, and water retention basins and reservoirs.

One of the key investments under this program is the acquisition of a mobile flood protection system. This system, which costs around 317,000 euros, can be deployed flexibly and set up on site to a length of 600 meters. The costs of the heat action plan will be co-financed by the climate ministry with 63,000 euros.

The heat action plan will focus on using a heat warning system, long-term urban planning, reducing heat in indoor spaces, and providing special protection for at-risk groups. The Burgenlandkreis has already had a heat protection concept for a year and will now create a heat protection plan to reach vulnerable groups in the population.

Dr. Ariane Körner, Deputy Regional Councilor, stated that protecting the population from the consequences of climate change is a top priority in the Burgenlandkreis. The demand for the "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" program in the state is immense, with the funding rounds for July to October 2024 and May to June 2025 being oversubscribed several times.

The funding for the climate action program "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" is not only from the state but also from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE). The Burgenlandkreis has received over 348,000 euros in funding from the EFRE for climate change adaptation.

The "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" program is a part of the Ministry of Climate Protection's efforts to provide funding for adaptation measures to climate change. The program provides a total of 35 million euros from the EFRE for municipal investments in climate change adaptation, including investments in heavy rain management and climate resilience.

In addition to these investments, the funding will also be used for de-sealing and greening of public areas, planting with climate-adapted shrub and tree species, and creating a heat action plan for the entire district. These measures aim to not only protect the population from the effects of climate change but also to make Saxony-Anhalt a more sustainable and resilient region.
