Future in Digital Realm Seemingly Aims for Ideal Society
In the realm of electronic music, Discovery Zone, the alias of artist JJ Weihl, has created a stir with their latest release, Quantum Web. This concept album delves into the complexities of our digital world, exploring topics such as data tracking and cybernetics through mesmerizing hyperpop beats, lo-fi vocals, and synths.
Weihl, whose Instagram handle is @discoveryz0ne, is no stranger to challenging the status quo. The artist's work often addresses the use of data in online practices by corporations, suggesting a lack of attention to the issue. This concern is reflected in Quantum Web, which questions the current digital world's lack of freedom from exploitation.
To create an immersive onstage experience, Weihl employs a special screen to project 3D visuals during performances. This interactive element adds a layer of depth to the music, enhancing the album's themes.
The inspiration for Quantum Web can be traced back to a class Weihl took at The School of Machines and Make Believe in 2021, called Radical Imperfection in Time-Tracking. This course introduced Weihl to the concept of self-tracking and data visualization, which greatly influenced the album's creation.
One of the standout tracks from Quantum Web is 'Cybernetica', a commissioned piece created after completing the Radical Imperfection in Time-Tracking class. For this song, Weihl hired a private investigator to collect personal data and create data visualizations. Four songs from 'Cybernetica' served as the foundation for the new record.
Weihl expresses a desire for an alternative version of the digital world, comparing it to an abusive relationship and highlighting the complicity of users. The artist emphasizes human responsibility for the condition of the digital world, suggesting that engagement with digital platforms that exploit user data is a hyper-normalized reality.
Quantum Web is now available for listening, offering a captivating exploration of our digital world and our place within it. Discovery Zone, through its thought-provoking music, invites listeners to question their own relationship with technology and consider the implications of our increasing reliance on digital platforms.
Interestingly, the name Discovery Zone is a reincarnated name, originally belonging to an American chain of child entertainment facilities that went bankrupt in the mid-1990s. Today, the current location of the Discovery Zone is the LEGO® Discovery Centre in Hamburg, Germany, located in the Westfield Überseequartier. It is an indoor attraction for children aged 2 to 12 years focused on playing with LEGO bricks. Despite the name's history, Discovery Zone in the music world represents a desire for curiosity and exploration within the confines of 'RealityTM'.
