Gathering dust in the attic for years.
In a serendipitous discovery that has left art lovers thrilled, a collection of 23 printing blocks, approximately 90 years old, was unearthed in an attic on Rothenberger Street in Altenau, a town nestled in the Harz region. These printing blocks, adorned with woodcuts by Karl Reinecke, have been long forgotten for decades, but their condition remains surprisingly well-preserved despite their age.
The find is not just exciting, but of great cultural value. Original printing blocks from Reinecke's work are a genuine rarity today, more than 80 years after his death and the bombing of his apartment. Dr. Kai Gurski, a Reinecke expert, considers the found pieces to be a "real treasure."
The motifs on the printing blocks are impressively diverse, including rare representations such as a north German net mender and a presumed portrait of Walter Spengler. The thematic references of the prints reflect the turbulent time of the late 1920s and early 1930s, with greeting motifs showing a worker framed by lightning, symbolizing hardship.
The discovery surpasses all expectations and goes far beyond old clothing, as more forgotten artworks might be hidden in the attics of the Harz region. This discovery serves as a reminder that a trip to one's own attic could potentially reveal more such forgotten treasures.
After the discovery, the printing blocks were handed over to the Heimatstube Altenau-Schulenberg for proper storage. The find in Altenau's attic has sparked renewed interest in the work of Karl Reinecke and the cultural history of the Harz region during that period, a time when many people were suffering from the decline of mining and ironworks.
Despite the lack of publicly available specific details about the owner of the discovered printing plates from Altenau in the Harz Mountains who hid them in his cellar for decades, one thing is certain: this discovery has added a significant chapter to the cultural history of the Harz region.
