Gathering in Laos to honor the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day celebration
In the heart of Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, a historic gathering took place on August 30, 2021. The occasion was the celebration of Vietnam's 80th National Day, and the guest of honour was none other than the Ambassador of Vietnam to Laos, Nguyen Minh Tam.
Tam, in his speech, highlighted the significance of the August Revolution and National Day of Vietnam, noting that these events symbolise the transformation of the Vietnamese people from colonial subjects to masters of their nation. He also emphasised that these milestones affirm Vietnam's prestige in the international arena.
The special Vietnam-Laos relationship was a topic of great importance during the celebration. Bounthong Chitmany, a Politburo member and Vice President of Laos, stated that the friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between the two nations have strengthened. He considered this relationship as a valuable asset that should be preserved and promoted.
Bounthong also noted that every victory of Vietnam has been supported by the Lao Party, State, and people. This sentiment was echoed by Tam, who affirmed the Lao Party, Government, and people's determination to collaborate with Vietnam in preserving and enhancing their relationship.
The economic ties between the two countries are robust. Vietnam remains one of the largest investors in Laos, with total registered capital of $5.8 billion. Two-way trade between Laos and Vietnam is expected to reach $5 billion this year. However, neither Tam nor Bounthong mentioned the specific amount of total registered Vietnamese capital in Laos during their speeches.
The historical foundation of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) by Ho Chi Minh was not explicitly mentioned during the celebration. Bounthong, however, noted the establishment of the Indochinese Communist Party by Ho Chi Minh as the foundation for the CPV and the LPRP.
Looking back at the past, Bounthong highlighted that bilateral cooperation between Laos and Vietnam has become increasingly effective in areas such as politics, defense-security, economy, culture, education, and health. He also pointed out that this historic victory created favorable conditions for the Lao people to declare independence on October 12, 1945.
After 80 years and nearly 40 years of Đội Mội, Vietnam has achieved significant successes in economic development, foreign affairs, and global integration. The Ambassador of Vietnam to Laos, Nguyen Minh Tam, reaffirmed Vietnam's resolve with the Đổi mới (renewal) process in 1986.
Tam concluded his speech by expressing confidence in the Lao people's ability to achieve further success in building a peaceful and prosperous nation. This sentiment was shared by Bounthong, who emphasised that every victory of Laos has been supported by Vietnam.
The meeting in Vientiane on August 30 was co-organized by several Lao committees and the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Association Central Committee. It was a testament to the strong ties between the two nations and a celebration of their shared history and future.
