Generous Powerball Winner in Virginia Donates Entire Prize to Charity and Military Families
In a heartwarming display of generosity, Carrie Edwards, a resident of Midlothian, Chester County, has donated her entire Powerball winnings of $150,000 to charitable causes. The Virginia Lottery announced Edwards' win on September 19, 2025, revealing that she had matched five of the six drawn numbers during the Powerball drawing on September 8, 2025, with the Power Play landing on 3x.
Edwards' decision to donate her winnings is deeply personal, as her husband, a father and firefighter, died of frontotemporal dementia. In honour of his memory, she intends to support the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, an organisation that funds research, education, and family resources for early-onset dementia.
The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration will not be the only beneficiary of Edwards' generosity. Shalom Farms, a nonprofit farm and food justice organisation in Richmond, and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which provides financial, educational, and emergency assistance to military personnel and their families, are also set to receive donations. Edwards has not specified if the three beneficiaries will receive equal gifts.
Edwards' charitable donations are not a recent development. In 2020, she donated to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, and her third charitable donation with her Powerball winnings represents healing, service, and community.
Interestingly, Carrie Edwards is not the only individual associated with a significant charitable donation. In 2013, Canadian Tom Crist, a retired former president and CEO of an electrical products and services wholesale company, donated the entire jackpot from a lottery win worth $40 million to cancer research. Crist's wife had passed away from cancer two years before he won the lottery.
The Virginia Lottery Executive Director, Khalid Jones, emphasised that lottery proceeds, like Edwards' winnings, support K-12 public education in the commonwealth. Edwards' act of generosity serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating the transformative power of lottery winnings when directed towards worthy causes.
Edwards expressed her intentions to donate her winnings during World FTD Awareness Month, stating, "After all, we are all just walking each other Home." Indeed, Edwards' act of generosity serves as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of personal loss, reminding us all of the importance of giving back to our communities.
