George Kittle's recent injury: Current status after Kyle Shanahan discusses 49ers' leading player's setback

In a nail-biting season opener, the San Francisco 49ers managed to secure a 17-13 win against the Seattle Seahawks, despite key injuries to star tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

Kittle, who scored the Niners' opening touchdown of the game before sustaining a hamstring injury with 10:06 left in the second quarter, was officially ruled out for the rest of the game with two minutes remaining in the first half. The injury occurred while Kittle was running a route down the right sideline, on the same play that quarterback Brock Purdy was sacked. Kittle limped back to the sideline and immediately went into the blue injury tent for assessment.

Jennings also left the game with a shoulder injury and will have a scan on Monday.

With Kittle out of the game, backup tight end Jake Tonges stepped up to the plate. Tonges' touchdown, with 1:34 left in the game, secured the victory for the Niners. The play was a scramble by Purdy and a high pass into the back-right corner of the end zone, which Tonges caught while ensuring he was in bounds and looking around for flags, but the play was not flagged. Tonges' touchdown was his first career score.

Coach Kyle Shanahan hinted that the 49ers could sign free agent wide receiver Kendrick Bourne to fill a gap on offense if either Kittle or Jennings are ruled out for an extended period. Bourne spent his first four NFL seasons with the Niners before departing for the New England Patriots in 2021.

The Niners will have to get MRIs done on Monday to determine the seriousness of Kittle's injury. The team can take solace in the fact that they are a better team with Kittle healthy, and Shanahan will hope his hamstring injury is not too serious.

The San Francisco 49ers have a dedicated Facebook page (talkSPORT USA) and YouTube channel for NFL news, interviews, and more, where fans can stay updated on the latest developments regarding Kittle's injury and the team's plans for the rest of the season.
