George Russell's absence of medium tires during Q3's qualifying round
In the Italian Grand Prix qualifying session at Monza, George Russell found himself finishing in seventh position. However, the Briton believes he could have secured a higher spot had there not been a miscommunication about the tire choice in Q3.
Russell, who led the way in Q1 with his strong performance on medium tires, was sent out with soft tires in Q3. This decision, he believes, might have yielded different results, as he felt the medium tires performed well in Q1.
The team had initially planned to use soft tires, but Russell expressed his preference for mediums in Q2 and Q3. Unfortunately, there was a communication error between him and the team, resulting in the use of soft tires in Q3.
Russell improved by 1.5 tenths overall, which is less than usual. In Q1, he clocked a time of 1:19.414, and in Q3, he managed to shave off less than three tenths with fresh soft tires. The driver admits he is unsure of how much time the medium tires could have saved in a direct comparison.
Toto Wolff, the team principal, acknowledges that Russell's teammate, Kimi Antonelli, faces the same challenge in the race as Russell. Antonelli, who finished qualifying in sixth position, had issues with tire temperature in the final lap of qualifying.
Russell believes he and the team share the blame for the miscommunication about the tire choice in Q3. He felt more comfortable on the medium tires than the soft tires and wishes he had more laps on the tire in Q1 to push harder.
Despite the setback, Russell feels P5 is deserved, and he is determined to make up for the lost ground in the race. Meanwhile, Antonelli's car is further forward on the grid, offering a promising start for the race.
In a timely comeback, Kimi Antonelli finished qualifying in seventh position, right behind his own teammate. The team will undoubtedly work to rectify the miscommunication and ensure a smoother race strategy in the future.
