George Washington Professor's New Book Challenges Gun-Control Narratives
Robert J. Cottrol, a prominent law and history professor at George Washington University, has published a new book titled 'To Trust the People with Arms'. The book explores how gun control measures have often been used to disenfranchise minority groups, challenging one-sided narratives in gun-control news.
Cottrol's interest in the Second Amendment began at the age of 12, sparked by watching 'The Diary of Anne Frank', reading a book by Robert Williams, and learning about the amendment in a Boy Scouts handbook. He later joined the Army National Guard and took up shooting as a sport during his graduate studies.
Cottrol is a leading expert on the Second Amendment, having written extensively on the topic over several decades. His work includes 'The Second Amendment on Trial', a collection of critical essays on the case District of Columbia v. Heller, and 'Gun Control and Gun Rights', a reader and guide co-authored with Raymond T. Diamond. Notably, Cottrol has primarily written his major works independently, with Diamond being the only known co-author.
Cottrol believes that academia is not entirely dominated by the far Left, and many liberals now accept the Second Amendment as an individual right. However, he sees a massive resistance in some jurisdictions to the Supreme Court's decisions on the Second Amendment, similar to the resistance to school integration in the 1950s.
Cottrol's new book, 'To Trust the People with Arms', aims to set the record straight about the Second Amendment and its history. Published just after the NRA-backed case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, Cottrol hopes his students and readers will understand the individual rights protected by the Second Amendment and engage in informed discussions about gun control news.
