German logistics company collaborates with Kyrgyz railways to strengthen freight connections across Central Asia
In a significant move to enhance connectivity and support the development of logistics centres in Kyrgyzstan, the Rhenus Group, a leading German logistics service provider, and Kyrgyz Temir Zholu, the National Railway Company of the Kyrgyz Republic, have signed a memorandum of cooperation.
The agreement was sealed during the German-Kyrgyz Economic Forum in Cholpon-Ata on August 27, 2024. The partnership aims to strengthen freight transport and logistics connectivity across Central Asia, particularly along the Trans-Caspian Corridor.
Under the terms of the memorandum, Rhenus and Kyrgyz Railways will collaborate to enhance cargo flows along existing international transport corridors. This collaboration is intended to support the Kyrgyz Republic's construction of a new railway linking China and Uzbekistan, a project expected to reduce the distance between China and Europe by several hundred kilometers.
The new railway will provide a direct connection to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, thereby boosting trade and transport links between Central Asia and Europe. The focus of the agreement is to develop integrated multimodal logistics solutions and enhance the Kyrgyz Republic's role as a regional transit hub.
The partnership includes consulting, analytical support, employee training, and the exchange of expertise in terminal development. Rhenus Group Director of Board Projects, Heinrich Kerstgens, stated that the agreement represents a strategic step toward enhancing connectivity.
Rhenus Group's broader strategy includes expanding its presence in regions redefining their role in global logistics. The project leader of Rhenus Group who joined forces with Kyrgyz Temir Zholu in August 2024 remains unnamed.
Earlier talks about expanding cooperation in transport and logistics between Kazakhstan and Germany took place in 2024, involving Rhenus Group CEO Tobias Bartz and Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.
While the partnership does not specify any potential impact on the overall logistics industry in the Kyrgyz Republic or Central Asia, it is clear that this collaboration will contribute to the development of future-oriented logistics infrastructure in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The Rhenus Group's press service stated that the agreement will strengthen freight transport and logistics connectivity across Central Asia, without providing further details about the duration or financial aspects of the agreement.
