Germany allocates approximately 3.9 million euros to Fraunhofer Institutes
In a bid to ensure the future-proofing of the Innovation Hub Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism has announced its support for eight transfer projects from twelve institutes of the Fraunhofer Society in Baden-Württemberg. The total funding for these projects, spanning from 2025 to 2028, amounts to approximately 3.9 million euros.
The Fraunhofer Society, a renowned research organisation based in Baden-Württemberg, is a comprehensive powerhouse covering all important technology fields. These include energy research, production research, materials research, security, mobility, learning systems and artificial intelligence, quantum sensorics, and bioeconomy and environmental technologies.
The Society operates 76 institutes and research facilities in Germany, employing around 32,000 staff members. In Baden-Württemberg alone, approximately 6,100 staff members are employed in the 13 institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, with a budget of approximately 600 million euros.
Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism, emphasises the goal of this support: "Excellent research must lead to tangible progress for SMEs." The selected projects demonstrate the performance of research institutions in transferring to the economy, especially in times of technological change.
The specific eight projects have been chosen based on their high innovative power, practical and low-threshold transfer formats, and broad economic impact. They cover a wide range of themes, including hydrogen technologies, AI-supported material data analysis, and the digitalization of the construction industry.
The Fraunhofer Society has been a central innovation factor in Baden-Württemberg, particularly for the SME sector, for decades. The regions of Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Karlsruhe are particular focal points for the Fraunhofer Society in Baden-Württemberg, each hosting five, five, and three institutes, respectively.
The Double Budget 2025/2026 provides special funds for the promotion of collaborations between the institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and medium-sized companies. Furthermore, the federal and state governments contribute around one-third of the funding for the Fraunhofer Society through basic funding. Around two-thirds of the contract research funding for the Fraunhofer Society is generated through industrial contracts and publicly funded research projects.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism can be contacted via the Press Office or the Citizen's Representative for further information. The support aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technology from research to medium-sized companies in the state and to future-proof the Innovation Hub Baden-Württemberg. The Ministry also supports the expansion and development of the Fraunhofer Society, the Innovation Alliance Baden-Württemberg, and the German Aerospace Center through investments in buildings and equipment.
