The Fraunhofer Society, a leading research organisation in Germany, has announced eight new projects aimed at developing innovative solutions in partnership with companies. These projects, which cover a wide range of topics including hydrogen technologies, AI-supported material data analysis, and the digitalization of the construction industry, are expected to run from 2025 to 2028.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg is providing substantial support for these projects, totalling approximately 3.9 million euros. This funding is a significant contribution to the performance capability of applied research, as the Fraunhofer Society's annual research volume is approximately 3.4 billion euros, with 3 billion euros coming from contract research.

Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism, stated that the goal is for excellent research to lead to tangible progress for small and medium-sized enterprises. The projects were chosen through a funding competition, with the criteria being high levels of innovation, practical and accessible transfer formats, and broad economic impact.

The Fraunhofer Society in Baden-Württemberg employs around 6,100 employees, and the budget, including investments, amounts to around 600 million euros. The organisation operates 13 institutes in Baden-Württemberg and is part of a network of 76 institutes and research facilities across Germany.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism supports the institutes of applied research, including the Fraunhofer Society, through investments in buildings and equipment. This support is part of the state government's strategic goals in innovation policy, which includes the further expansion of applied research and the foundation and settlement of new institutes.

The aim of the support is to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and technology from research to small and medium-sized enterprises in Baden-Württemberg and future-proof the Innovation Location Baden-Württemberg. The projects are expected to contribute to the advancement of applied research, the development of new technologies, and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.

The Fraunhofer Society, founded in 1949, has a workforce of around 32,000 employees, predominantly with backgrounds in natural or engineering sciences. Between 2025 and 2028, the Fraunhofer Society, in collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises in Baden-Württemberg and supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism, will execute these eight projects. The Double Budget 2025/2026 is being used by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg to promote collaborations between the institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and small and medium-sized enterprises.
