"Germany's City Building Prize bestows honor upon "Jupiter""
In a celebration of innovative urban development, the city of Hamburg has once again made headlines, this time with the "Jupiter" project receiving the Special Prize at the German Urban Planning Award 2025. This prestigious accolade marks the second national award for the project, following its win at the Polis Award last year.
The German Urban Planning Award, presented by the German Academy for Urban Planning and Regional Planning (DASL) for 45 years, recognises projects that make a sustainable and positive contribution to urban development. This year's award, under the theme "Renovation Culture in the Circular City", honours concepts that innovatively revitalise vacant infrastructures.
The Jupiter project, which has been part of the creative interim use of the Hamburg Creative Society from 2021 to April 2025, transformed the former department store on Mönckebergstraße into a "Creative Department Store". This vibrant space now hosts a bar, changing exhibitions, pop-ups, concerts, shops, educational programmes, and a variety of cultural and creative offerings.
The project, led by a consortium of leading European research institutes, emphasises international scientific cooperation. The specific coordinating organisation is not explicitly named, but it involves European partners collaborating as a collective.
The Future Fashion Lab, a new initiative by DASL, also finds its home in Hamburg. Focused on sustainable fashion, it complements the Jupiter project's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Hamburg's support for creative ideas for the city centre is evident in its model for addressing vacancies. The city is not only promoting digital transformation in the creative industry but also providing solutions for vacancies through its Hamburg model.
The 8,000 square metre Jupiter was the largest of 91 areas that were creatively used interim by the Hamburg Creative Society's Frei_Fläche program. The project has been made an open and lively place for culture, innovation, and encounter, reflecting Hamburg's transition towards a digital economy in the creative sector.
The Jupiter project's success is a testament to Hamburg's dedication to urban development and its commitment to fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and innovative cityscape. The Special Prize at the German Urban Planning Award 2025 is a well-deserved recognition of this groundbreaking project.
