The New York Giants kicked off their 2023 season with a 21-6 loss to the Washington Commanders, marking the debut of quarterback Russell Wilson. Despite the defeat, the team has not made a decision to change quarterbacks, as Wilson will start in their Week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Wilson led the Giants' rushing attack in the opening game, amassing 44 yards on the ground. However, he was unable to find the end zone and completed 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards. The offensive line struggled in the absence of Andrew Thomas, and the running game was an afterthought, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. accounting for 24 yards on 10 carries.

Head coach Brian Daboll acknowledged the team's collective underperformance in Wilson's debut, stating, "We did not play well as a team." Daboll also emphasized that the loss was not solely Wilson's fault, attributing the team's struggles to a lack of cohesion.

Despite the rocky start, the team's readiness to use rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was evident. Dart, who starred during preseason play, completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns, has been spending a lot of time preparing himself for potential game action. The decision to potentially make Dart the franchise quarterback in the event of a change was implicitly supported by Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who prepared a package of plays for him. However, no official declaration has been made, and the organization remains patient with Wilson as the starter.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys, who traded away their best player, Micah Parsons, before the start of the season, had a close game against the defending-champion Philadelphia Eagles, ultimately losing 24-20 in their season opener. The Giants will look to bounce back against the Cowboys in Week 2, with Wilson leading the charge.
