In a significant milestone for the aviation industry, Etihad Airways, the UAE's national carrier, announced record profits and passenger numbers for the first half of 2025. The airline reported a net profit of Dh1.1 billion, marking a remarkable achievement in the face of global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

Speaking about the success, Etihad Airways' CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, highlighted the airline's robust international network and strategic partnerships as key factors. According to Neves, the airline does not rely on any specific market and has a strong presence in various regions.

Neves also emphasised that while some regions are stronger than others, the airline's diverse operations ensure that one region's performance compensates for another. This strategic approach has been instrumental in Etihad Airways' resilience and growth.

The UAE's aviation sector has been thriving, with Etihad Airways' rival, Emirates, also hitting a new record after-tax profit of Dh19.1 billion in 2024-25. This success is attributed to the global economy's favourable conditions, as stated by Neves.

However, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has expressed concerns about the impact of trade tariffs and prolonged trade wars on the demand for air cargo and travel. Uncertainty over trade policies could potentially hinder critical business decisions that drive economic activity and the demand for air travel.

Despite these challenges, Etihad Airways remains optimistic about the future. Neves stated that the airline is open for business in terms of partnerships and is actively investing in attracting companies to Abu Dhabi.

Recently, Etihad Airways has seen an expansion in its network with the addition of several new airlines operating flights to Abu Dhabi. Air Europa, Ethiopian Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Akasa Air now fly to the city, a development that did not occur previously.

As Etihad Airways continues to break records and expand its reach, it serves as a beacon of resilience and growth in the global aviation industry. The airline expects the second half of 2025 to be even better, with continued growth in profits and passenger numbers.
