Gold Medal Victory for Mexico at World Archery Championships
Mexico has made history at the World Archery Championships, securing its first-ever gold medal in a thrilling final match against the United States. The Mexican team, consisting of Maya Becerra, Mariana Bernal, and Adriana Castillo, triumphed with a score of 236-231.
The journey to the top began in the round of 16, where Mexico defeated France in a sudden-death match. This was followed by a close quarterfinal victory against Denmark, with a score of 232-231. The team then went on to win against Kazakhstan in the semifinals, setting the stage for the highly anticipated final match.
Maya Becerra, a key player in the team, shone brightly in the final, securing the gold medal with a perfect 10 shot. Becerra also won a bronze medal in the mixed team event alongside Sebastiáñ Garciá.
Olympians Alejandra Valencia and Matiás Grande are set to compete next, following in the footsteps of their successful teammates. Both Valencia and Grande have strong medal prospects, adding to Mexico's hopes of continued success at the championships.
The World Archery Championships, which are running from Sept. 5 to Sept. 12, combine qualification, heats, and finals in the recurve and compound categories. The championships can be watched live in Mexico via Claro Sports.
Mariana Bernal expressed her happiness and sense of achievement after the victory, stating, "This is a dream come true for us. We have worked hard to get to this point, and it feels amazing to bring home a gold medal for Mexico."
Team Mexico has already won two gold medals at World Cups (in Central Florida and Shanghai) and the Copa Merengue, qualifying for the 2026 Central American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Mexican delegation consists of 12 archers participating in various individual and team events.
The World Archery Championships have seen many exciting matches and dramatic finishes, but none more so than Mexico's historic gold medal win. The team's success is a testament to their dedication, skill, and teamwork, and they are sure to be a force to be reckoned with in future competitions.
