A Rare Gold Treasure Holds its Value: King Ludwig II's Watch Remains in the Stein Family

A unique piece of history, a golden watch from around 1880, once belonged to King Ludwig II and is now in the possession of Michael Stein. This treasure, adorned with turquoises and diamonds in rose cut and bearing the insignia of the Bavarian crown, was the centre of attention on the ZDF cult show "Bares für Rares" on August 15, 2025.

The treasure, which has been in the Stein family's possession for over 140 years, was admired for its craftsmanship, elegant design, and royal history in the "Bares für Rares" trader's room. Horst Lichter and expert Dr. Heide Rezepa-Zabel were amazed by the treasure during the show's expertise.

Dr. Rezepa-Zabel estimated the pure gold value of the watch to be around 19,000 euros. However, she suggested that the material value of the treasure is extremely high, reaching into the five-figure range due to its rarity and historical significance.

King Ludwig II presented the treasure as a sign of loyalty to Stein's great-great-grandfather. Despite this, there are no search results providing the name of a relative to whom King Ludwig II gave the golden watch heirloom.

Stein values the watch at 70,000 euros according to his valuation at Sotheby's Munich. However, no trader in the "Bares für Rares" trader's room was willing to meet Stein's requested price. Susanne Steiger made the highest bid of 40,000 euros, but Stein remains steadfast and does not consider selling the watch for less than his requested price.

Dr. Rezepa-Zabel's own estimated price for the watch is between 30,000 to 35,000 euros. Stein is content with the decision to keep the watch in the family, as it holds a special place in their history.

The treasure, with its royal pedigree and exquisite craftsmanship, continues to captivate those who lay eyes on it. Its value may be debated, but its place in history is undeniable.
