Google Maps, a popular navigation app, has announced the addition of a long-awaited feature: a speedometer and speed limit indicators. This update is not groundbreaking in the world of navigation apps, as Waze and Android Maps have already offered these features. However, for iPhone users and cars with CarPlay infotainment systems, this is a significant development.

The speedometer will appear in the bottom left of the Google Maps screen when enabled. Users can find the settings to enable these features by navigating to Settings > Navigation, where they will find switches for the Speedometer and Speed limits. The speed limit indicator is expected to improve the driving experience by providing a visual aid for users, helping them to stay aware of their speed and the speed limit.

Google Maps is following in the footsteps of other navigation apps by introducing these features. The speedometer changes colours when you go over the speed limit as a reminder to slow down. This feature is "for informational use only" according to Google, and your car's own speedometer takes precedence.

The first country outside the USA where Google Maps introduced these features for iOS and CarPlay was Germany. The speedometer and speed limit indicators have already been implemented in the U.S. version of Google Maps, and the changes will be implemented worldwide.

These features were first introduced by Waze in 2016, and Android has had them since 2019. They were first spotted in the Indian version of Google Maps. iPhone users and cars with CarPlay infotainment systems will now be able to view their current speed and speed limit using Google Maps, making it easier for them to navigate their journeys.

Google's introduction of the speedometer and speed limit indicators is expected to enhance the driving experience for its users, providing them with valuable information to make informed decisions while on the road.
