Government delivers on commitment to veterans, introducing rail discount card
The UK government has announced a new strategy to support former servicemen and women, which includes the introduction of a discounted rail travel railcard for veterans. This railcard will extend discounted train travel to veterans not currently covered by existing discounts.
The new railcard, set to be available from Armistice Day this year, is one component of the government's broader veterans strategy. This strategy aims to provide support in areas such as employment, health, finance, housing, and contact with the law.
The Office for Veterans' Affairs, a recently-established entity, will coordinate the new action plan. The goal is to make the UK the best place for veterans, driving the new action plan to address the needs of over 830,000 veterans.
The railcard is intended to help veterans with job prospects and strengthen family bonds through cheaper travel. Other key findings from the consultation include a call to promote a positive perception of veterans and increase awareness of existing support.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the railcard at an event joined by veterans and the Minister for Defence People and Veterans. The government has published its action plan for veterans over the next 2 years, which includes efforts on jobs, housing, and health for veterans.
The government's response for the consultation into the veterans strategy has also been released. The consultation results emphasized the need for a more coordinated approach to veterans' support. The consultation responses can be found on the provided link.
Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden, who represents the Office for Veterans Affairs in Cabinet, stated that the office is already showing it can deliver results, such as the railcard. The railcard will provide a third off fares, potentially saving veterans hundreds of pounds annually.
The government's veterans strategy is part of its commitment to support former servicemen and women. The railcard announcement is a manifesto commitment being delivered by the government.
