Government maintains it holds no responsibility for safeguarding the upcoming humanitarian mission bound for Gaza.
Portuguese Delegation Sets Sail for Gaza on Humanitarian Mission
A Portuguese delegation, led by politician Mariana Mortágua, is preparing to embark on a humanitarian mission to Gaza this Sunday. The mission aims to deliver much-needed aid to the populations of the region, and the delegation includes actors, politicians, and activists.
The humanitarian fleet will travel in several small boats and will take two weeks to reach its destination. Notably, Mariana Mortágua will be accompanied by representatives from 44 countries. In addition to Mortágua, the Portuguese delegation includes actress Sofia Aparição and activist Miguel Duarte.
It is important to clarify that the humanitarian mission to Gaza is from civil society, not the Portuguese state. The Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, has made it clear that the Portuguese state is not linked to the humanitarian mission. Rangel also stated that the Portuguese state does not have anything to protect or accompany the humanitarian fleet.
The symbolic objective of the humanitarian fleet is to break the siege of Gaza. In June, Greta Thunberg was detained by Israeli authorities upon trying to enter Gaza, and she was later deported after attempting to deliver humanitarian aid by boat.
Rangel expressed that the Portuguese state will not start a war against Israel. He also clarified that the humanitarian mission to Gaza is not organized by the Portuguese state, and the fleet does not have the guarantee of security from the Portuguese government.
Despite these challenges, the delegation remains committed to delivering aid and raising awareness about the ongoing situation in Gaza. The humanitarian fleet's mission is a testament to the power of civil society and the importance of humanitarian action in times of crisis.
