Government of François Bayrou compelled to step down following vote of disapproval in National Assembly
In an extraordinary session at the National Assembly in Paris, the government of François Bayrou was dismissed on Monday, September 8, 2020, following a vote of no confidence.
According to France Inter, government sources confirmed the news. The vote resulted in a total of 364 Members of Parliament (MPs) voting against confidence in the government, while 194 voted in favour.
The vote was a response to the Prime Minister's request for parliamentarians' opinion on the public deficit and the budgetary measures required to address it. The unfavourable vote forced the government led by François Bayrou to resign.
In his speech, François Bayrou acknowledged the outcome, stating, "You have the power to topple the government," but not the one "to erase reality." He announced that he will tender his resignation on Tuesday at 8 am.
The resignation is scheduled to take effect on Tuesday, following the Prime Minister's request for parliamentarians' opinion on the budgetary effort required to address the public deficit. The event marks a significant political shift in France.
