Government's Response Regarding Federal Issues:

The German government, along with Deutsche Bahn, is spearheading an ambitious plan to expand the electrified rail network, aiming to reach a total length of 530 km by 2030. This expansion is a continuous process, with new sections being switched to electric operation each year.

In 2021, Deutsche Bahn invested 106 million euros in the overhead line section of railway tracks, contributing 1 million euros in equity. This investment increased to 130 million euros in 2022, with an equity contribution of 22 million euros, and further to 238 million euros in 2024, with 54 million euros in equity.

As of now, 150.9 km of railway track was newly switched to electric operation in 2021, followed by 149.6 km in 2022, and 24.0 km in 2024. However, these investments and expansions come with maintenance challenges.

By 2045, the maintenance needs for the overhead lines are expected to increase significantly, with the amount of overhead line in need of catch-up maintenance reaching approximately 19,000 km. This is concerning as, as of now, the technical service life of 6,450 km of overhead line has been exceeded.

It's important to note that the responsibility for financing the transition of railways to electric operation from 2030 lies primarily with the federal government of Germany. States like Bavaria also contribute upfront financing for specific projects to enable later realization via federal funding programs. Deutsche Bahn is required to contribute a self-financed share.

In conclusion, while Germany is making significant strides in expanding its electrified rail network, the maintenance of these lines in the future presents a significant challenge. The federal government, along with Deutsche Bahn, will need to carefully plan and allocate resources to address this issue and ensure the continued success of the electrified rail network.
