Grammy-winning artist announces plans for a biopic on iconic singer B.B. King, with a Masked Singer celebrity participating
In an exciting development for the music and film industries, music producer, record executive, and film composer Vassal Benford has announced a new biopic on blues legend B.B. King. The film promises to delve into the life of the undisputed king of the blues, who was hailed as such for most of his career spanning nearly 70 years.
B.B. King, affectionately known as the King of the Blues, was a mentor to many guitarists, including Eric Clapton, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, and Keith Richards. His influence extended beyond the music world, making him a cultural icon.
The biopic will cover King's entire life story, from his humble beginnings to his end. It will show how he left his hometown, ended up in Memphis, and mentored Elvis Presley. A notable aspect of the film will be the story of Lucille, King's famous guitar, which was a Gibson model.
Benford, who co-founded Benford & Canton Studios with producer Mark Canton, has a key role in preserving and expanding the legacy of B.B. King. He has worked with numerous stars and produced soundtracks for hit films. His recent credits include co-producing several tracks on Chris Brown's album 11.11, which received a Grammy nomination and won R&B Album of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Two prominent singers whose music will feature in the film are Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc and Quavo, one-third of the rap duo Migos. Quavo recently performed at the hip-hop concert Rolling Loud festival in Los Angeles in March.
The biopic is expected to intrigue a younger audience due to the inclusion of current major singers. Benford's connection with the entertainment industry, having worked with music legends such as Quincy Jones, Don Davis, and Clarence Avant, will undoubtedly contribute to the film's success.
B.B. King's style included single-string runs, loud chords, subtle vibratos, and bent notes. His signature song, The Thrill is Gone, could bring chills to an audience. Despite battling diabetes, King continued to perform well into his 80s. He passed away at the age of 89 in May 2015 at his home in Las Vegas.
With Vassal Benford at the helm, the B.B. King biopic is set to be an impressive tribute to a legendary musician and a cultural icon.
