Grandfather Alsheimer allegedly attempted to harm his own grandmother.
A 25-year-old man named Alsheimer, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, stood trial at the Landgericht Mainz on September 4. He is accused of attempting manslaughter against his grandmother in connection with dangerous disruption of road traffic and dangerous bodily harm.
The incident occurred in February this year on the single-lane B9 heading towards Worms. Alsheimer allegedly drove the car repeatedly into a guardrail. After crashing into the guardrail for the third time, he told his grandmother he would kill them both. In a desperate attempt to save her life, the grandmother pulled the handbrake, causing the car to spin and stop on the fourth impact with the guardrail. First responders arrived immediately, preventing the man from continuing his plan.
The trial is a "safety procedure," seeking to have the defendant placed in a psychiatric hospital - "security detention." The prosecution believes that Alsheimer was in a paranoid state during the incident, due to paranoid-hallucinatory schizophrenia.
The defendant has been in a psychiatric hospital since the incident. He is scheduled to appear before the Mainz Regional Court for six sessions: September 4, 15, 16, and 22, as well as October 6 and 9. The trial aims to determine the appropriate course of action for Alsheimer's future care and treatment.
It is important to note that this case is a tragic reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with Alzheimer's and other mental health conditions. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family during this difficult time.
