In the heart of Germany, the state of Saxony-Anhalt is fostering digital transformation among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the DIGITAL INNOVATION program. This initiative, a key component of the "Saxony-Anhalt Digital 2030" strategy, aims to integrate administration, economy, and society equally.

The program offers workshops to help companies learn about the criteria and refine their ideas. It is open to SMEs across various sectors, with a focus on digital health innovations in the five counties of the former lignite mining area. Projects should align with one of the specified technological focus areas: XR-Metaverse care, connected mobility and Internet-of-Care-Things (IoCT), telecare, digital-assistive technologies and robotics, or any other innovations that aim to improve care delivery.

Projects must involve participatory approaches, engaging caregivers and care recipients in the development process, and utilize available infrastructure such as modern labs and care facilities to develop practical, needs-based digital tools for everyday care use.

Fundable digitalization projects can include automating internal processes, enhancing IT security, developing digital sales strategies, or creating new products like apps, webshops, or complex platforms. Up to 6,000 euros can be allocated for external expertise, and up to half of the fundable expenses can be covered, with a maximum of 70,000 euros per project. For larger projects, another funding line provides subsidies of up to 90%, up to a maximum of 120,000 euros per project.

The application process involves competition, deadlines, and the submission of required documents. A well-prepared project outline is needed to increase chances of funding. It is important to note that each company can only submit one application per round. In case of a tie, industry distribution is included to prevent funds from flowing too one-sidedly into individual areas.

Applications for the program are processed by the Investment Bank of Saxony-Anhalt. The selection ensures funding is not awarded randomly, but supports concepts with the most potential for innovation and value creation. The project duration should not exceed twelve months.

Visible progress can already be seen in Saxony-Anhalt, such as the digitalization of the gambling authority's license allocation and interface management. The focus is on businesses that often have to stretch every euro to invest in new projects.

The fourth competition round for the DIGITAL INNOVATION program ended in May 2025, and the next one is announced for fall. Freelancers or sole proprietors can potentially benefit, but the main target group is SMEs.

The selection process is based on a point system, considering criteria such as innovation height, regional relevance, and feasibility. The program provides funding for businesses to test, implement, and reinvent digital business models, supporting the growth and success of Saxony-Anhalt's businesses in the digital age.
