In the summer of 2022, the Russian tourism industry experienced a series of notable changes, as reported by various tour operators and market sources.

According to Ostrovok, the average nightly rate for accommodations increased by 9% to 6,100 rubles. This trend was not limited to Moscow, as the same increase was observed in Moscow, reaching 8,700 rubles per night. However, the most significant price hike was seen in Crimea, where the average cost of a sold night, including services, increased by 75.3% to 18,500 rubles.

Despite the price increase, the share of the Krasnodar region in the structure of domestic tour operator sales decreased by 10.3 percentage points year-on-year, to 37.6%. This decrease in interest was also confirmed by a market source, who reported a 10% year-on-year decrease in demand for the Krasnodar region.

Interestingly, demand for Anapa decreased by 60-70% year-on-year, while demand for Sochi and Gelendzhik decreased by approximately 20%. However, the tour operator "Alean" reported an increase in sales, excluding the Krasnodar region.

The high cost of flights at the airport in Gelendzhik, which primarily makes it oriented towards business travelers and residents of Krasnodar, may have contributed to the decrease in demand for the destination this summer. Despite the resumption of operations at the local airport in Gelendzhik in late July, the summer demand for the destination decreased. The average cost of a booked tour to Gelendzhik this summer was 125,000 rubles, an increase of 14% year-over-year.

On a positive note, the total number of hotel bookings in Russia for June-August increased by 4.8% year-on-year, according to Travelline. This increase was also reflected in the average cost of a booked night in Russian hotels, which reached 11,500 rubles, including additional services, marking an increase of 21.6% year-over-year.

The share of Gelendzhik in the structure of organized domestic tours including flights was only 0.7%, indicating a preference for other destinations among tourists. However, regions in Russia with a particularly high share of hotel bookings and sales of organized domestic tours were not explicitly detailed in available sources.

The tour operator "Sletat.ru" reported that Kaliningrad Oblast and Caucasian Mineral Waters increased their share of the tourist market this summer. Travelata.ru also reported a decrease in the number of organized domestic tours including flights by 9% year-on-year in the summer.

Sergei Romashkin, Vice-President of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, estimates that the tourist flow in Russia during the summer season increased by 3-4% year-on-year, reaching approximately 52 million people. This positive trend since November last year, almost unrelated to a loss of tourist interest in Anapa, suggests a resilient Russian tourism industry in the face of challenges.

However, the impact of sanctions and a sharp decline in foreign tourists after the 2022 Ukraine invasion has led to an increase in domestic tourism in some Russian regions. Exact regional shares and year-over-year changes are not specified in the search results, but it is clear that the Russian tourism industry continues to adapt and evolve in response to changing circumstances.
