Greenhouse Venture Launched by Koppe Begonia in Portugal
Koppe Begonia Opens Sustainable Greenhouse in Portugal
Koppe Begonia, a renowned Dutch company known for its exquisite begonias and pioneering propagation techniques, has expanded its operations with the opening of a new greenhouse in the hills of the Algarve, Portugal. The official opening took place on August 26, 2025, and was attended by dedicated employees.
The new greenhouse, built by BosmanVanZaal, features a spacious 12.8-meter-wide Venlo structure. Mota-Engil, the company behind the construction, ensured a seamless integration of advanced climate management solutions, such as screening installations by Peter Dekker Installations.
The strategic decision to expand was driven by multiple advantages, including a motivated local workforce, reliable transportation routes, and lower insect pressure. Koppe Begonia's Portuguese operations are focused on sourcing superior plants, expanding propagation capacity, and leveraging Portugal's natural advantages to meet global demand.
The new greenhouse operates primarily on water sourced from rainfall and local canals, and its cultivation is overseen by Grower Avner Musli, who implements preventive and biological crop protection strategies. The greenhouse's climate control system includes external roll screens, internal shading options, and insect netting in vents, all managed by the Hoogendoorn IIVO computer system.
Part of Koppe's activities from the Netherlands have been relocated to Portugal due to the expansion. The greenhouse features a complete switch to LED lighting, supplied by DLI, reducing electricity consumption by up to 50%. This switch, based on successful trial results, now sees the mother plants in the new greenhouse cultivated entirely under LED lighting.
Koppe Begonia's operations in the new greenhouse are under strict MPS-GAP certification standards, ensuring responsible water use and meticulous documentation. The company's commitment to quality, innovation, and environmental responsibility is evident in this new venture.
Lisanne Koppe and Sandra Kus celebrated the opening by bringing in the first bench of mother plants. The greenhouse expansion allows Koppe to increase its Begonia cutting production, and its mobile benching system maximizes space efficiency. The new greenhouse signifies a shift towards more sustainable cultivation practices, marking a significant milestone in Koppe Begonia's ongoing journey of growth and environmental innovation.
