Greenlight given for the SEAT Audi Q3-inspired model, the SEAT IBX, to move forward in production.
SEAT IBX Compact SUV Set for Production
SEAT has confirmed it is developing its first compact SUV, the IBX, which is expected to fill a potentially lucrative hole in the brand's range. The new SUV is designed to tap into the ever-growing compact SUV market.
The IBX is expected to be based on the Audi Q3 platform, much like the concept version, and share its running gear with its German counterpart. This means the IBX will offer a choice of two flavors of 2.0 litre petrol and a 2.0 litre diesel engines.
The design of the IBX is expected to keep most of its concept look, with SEAT's Chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke, stating that the IBX represents the footprint of future SEAT design. However, it is unclear whether the hybrid powertrain fitted to the IBX Concept will make it to production.
The development of SEAT's first compact SUV has been a project in the works since the 2011 SEAT IBX Concept was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, indicating SEAT's intention to produce a compact SUV. SEAT has teased the arrival of this new compact SUV on their Twitter account.
The IBX has been signed off for production in 2012, and it is expected to launch in 2016. The production of the SEAT IBX is a relatively straightforward process, as SEAT is already geared up to produce the Audi Q3 at their Martorell plant in Spain.
The IBX is expected to be tailored more towards the fun end of the range, offering an exciting addition to SEAT's lineup. The IBX is set to preview SEAT's first SUV based on the SEAT Leon, potentially marking a new era for the Spanish automaker in the SUV segment.
