Group from Surif pays a visit to Neuwied to catch up with friends
In the heart of Germany, the city of Neuwied has forged a significant partnership with Surif, a city in Palestine. This partnership, initiated by the "Palestine Working Group" within the "Local Agenda 21 in the city and district of Neuwied," has seen the involvement of various cities and companies, including Mengen, Scheer, Hohentengen, and businesses like H.-D. Schunk GmbH & Co. Spanntechnik KG, Karl Späh GmbH & Co. KG, Manfred Löffler Wohn- und Gewerbebau Bauunternehmen GmbH, and Raab Karcher Baustoffhandel, among others. The focus of this partnership will increasingly shift towards the fields of logistics and the commercial sector.
Recently, a delegation from Surif visited Neuwied for the third time, led by Prof. Sami Adwan. The mayor, Jan Einig, welcomed them warmly, emphasizing that Neuwied welcomes the delegation from Surif as friends. The visit included a tour of the local facilities of Stadtwerke Neuwied.
Cooperation in the health sector is another key aspect of this partnership. Efforts are being made to intensify this cooperation between Neuwied and Surif. The peace prayer of Christians, Jews, and Muslims was held in Neuwied shortly after the outbreak of war, reflecting the city's commitment to peace.
The projects within this partnership are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and are handled through the city of Neuwied. The "Palestine Working Group" must contribute 10 percent of the project sum from its own funds, making it dependent on donations.
Notable members from the German side driving this partnership include Dr. Ingrid Degen, Inke Thiesen-Hart, Mechtilde Neuendorff, Susanne Britz, Prof. Josef Freise, Anne Peters-Rahn, and Wolfgang Rahn. The delegation from Surif during the latest visit included Iyad Hmidat, Armani Hih, and water engineering expert Fidaa Alqaddi.
The partnership has already seen the repair of a defective water pipe and the contribution towards the realization of a barrier-free children's playground in Surif. Neuwied is known as a "child-friendly municipality," making this project particularly meaningful.
During their visit, the delegation from Surif also signed the city's book of Neuwied, further cementing the bond between the two cities. For more information about this partnership, please visit: https://www.agenda-ring.de/ak-palaestina.html.
Mayor Einig reiterated that Neuwied does not want to be a judge in the Middle East conflict, but wants peace. The city of Neuwied, known for its commitment to peace and its child-friendly environment, continues to strive for mutual understanding and cooperation with Surif.
