Group of Romanian students participate in renowned Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025 competition
The Solis Team from Romania is making a strong showing in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025, a prestigious competition dedicated to solar-powered vehicles. The team, composed of 23 students, 2 faculty members, and a representative of the Romanian Auto Registry, embarked on their journey from Darwin on August 24.
The team's vehicle, named Hyperion, is the most advanced prototype ever built by the Solis UTCN team. It has already reached a top speed of over 100 km/h, showcasing its impressive design and efficiency.
The competition route spans a distance of 3,020 km, crossing the Australian desert from Darwin to Adelaide. Each day, teams are only allowed to travel between 08:00 - 17:00, making the event a challenge of efficiency as much as a race.
On the first day, the Solis Team covered 495 km in 8 hours, setting a solid pace for the competition. On the second day, they managed to travel an impressive 552 km, maintaining an average speed of 70 km/h. After two days, they find themselves in 15th place in the Challenger category.
The Challenger category regulations stipulate that vehicles can have only one occupant, and efficiency and aerodynamics determine the winner. This year, the regulations also include a maximum photovoltaic panel surface area of 6 sqm, a maximum battery capacity of 3 kWh, and the requirement for the vehicle to withstand the specific conditions of the Australian desert.
The Solis Team achieved a time of 2:23:37 in the qualifications, earning the 20th position at the start line. However, their consistent performance and impressive speed have moved them up the ranks.
The Netherlands' Brunel Solar Team currently leads the race with an average speed of 89 km/h. Other strong university teams from around the world are also competing, making the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025 a fierce and exciting competition.
The event, scheduled between August 24 and 31, is not just a race but a test of endurance and innovation. Each day, teams camp in the middle of the desert, preparing for the next day's challenge.
The Solis Team is representing Romania in this prestigious event, aiming to showcase the country's potential in solar technology and innovation. The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2025 is a platform for teams to push the boundaries of what is possible with solar power, and the Solis Team is certainly making their mark.
