Guangxi's commerce with Nigeria surpasses $320 Million in the year 2024
In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, a high-level delegation from the Guangxi People's Congress of China visited Nigeria last week. Led by Vice Chairman Zhang Xiaoqin, the delegation aimed to explore opportunities for cooperation and investment between the two countries.
During the visit, Zhang Xiaoqin highlighted Guangxi's strategic role as a regional hub in southern China, its successful hosting of the China-ASEAN Expo, and the impressive 21% growth in trade with Nigeria last year. He also emphasised the cultural and economic similarities between Guangxi and Nigeria, as noted by Mr. Zhou Hongyou of the Chinese Embassy.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of Nigeria's Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, welcomed the delegation. Tegbe described Guangxi as a new partner to Nigeria alongside Hunan Province and assured that the NCSP will work closely with the delegation to identify opportunities, particularly in manufacturing equipment, agriculture, fruit production, and processing.
Tegbe also highlighted Nigeria's long-standing relations with China, recently elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at FOCAC 2024. He pledged to visit Guangxi to learn from China's model of large-scale modernization and invited Nigerian businesses and tourists to explore Guangxi's strengths in fruit production, tourism, digital economy, and mining.
In a notable development, Tegbe recently announced over $20 billion in investment commitments across key sectors of Nigeria. In July 2025, he secured partnerships between Nigeria, China, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a total investment volume of $3.5 billion directed to key sectors in Nigeria. Tegbe's mandate is to steer the implementation of projects under FOCAC and pursue additional partnerships beyond formal agreements.
Vice Chairman Zhang Xiaoqin stressed Guangxi's readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria. He invited Nigerian businesses to explore the opportunities in Guangxi, particularly in the areas of manufacturing, agriculture, and digital economy. The visit by the Guangxi People's Congress delegation marks a significant step towards strengthening the strategic partnership between Nigeria and China.
In 2024, Nigeria's trade with southern China's Guangxi region reached $320 million. Tegbe's visit to Guangxi is expected to further boost this figure and solidify the economic ties between the two regions. The NCSP's mandate will continue to monitor FOCAC-agreed projects and oversee strategic projects of national interest, ensuring the continued growth and development of the Nigeria-China partnership.
