Guaranteed security is a crucial component of achieving a fair and enduring peace, according to Estonia's Prime Minister.

In a significant meeting held in Washington on Monday, European leaders demonstrated their unwavering support for Ukraine as they discussed the urgent need for security guarantees. The gathering, which included French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was also attended by the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna.

Tsahkna, in his statement, underscored the necessity of security guarantees that would involve both Europe and the United States. He emphasized that these guarantees are crucial for ensuring a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. The focus, according to Tsahkna, is on swiftly establishing security guarantees, with the essence being a commitment to defend Ukraine with real military capabilities if aggression recurs.

However, Tsahkna's statement did not expressly mention NATO's collective defense as a security guarantee. Instead, he highlighted that an agreement on security guarantees must form the basis of peace negotiations. The foreign minister did not mention any specific military capabilities in his statement about security guarantees, but he did believe that a commitment to defending Ukraine with real military capabilities is essential for these guarantees.

Tsahkna also stressed the importance of continuing to raise the cost of aggression. He linked the European Union's progress with the 19th sanctions package and Ukraine's EU accession negotiations to Ukraine's security. The foreign minister highlighted that security guarantees can ensure Ukraine's economic sustainability and political stability, in addition to its physical security.

The need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine was a shared understanding at the meeting. The foreign minister's statement did not indicate a preference for a specific type of security guarantee, focusing instead on the need for an agreement. The meeting discussed the need for Europe and the United States to work together on these security guarantees for Ukraine.

NATO's collective defense is considered the best security guarantee, but until it is reached, other guarantees are being sought. Tsahkna, in his statement, did not mention any specific military capabilities in his statement about security guarantees, focusing instead on the need for an agreement and the benefits of EU membership.

The meeting was held with a constructive spirit, aiming to contain an aggressive Russia and ensure peace and stability in Ukraine and the wider region. The foreign minister's emphasis on the need for security guarantees and the benefits of EU membership for Ukraine underscores the importance of this issue in the ongoing negotiations and discussions among global leaders.
