Guards to monitor the remaining caribou in Gaspé region?

The Gaspésie caribou, a species facing significant threats, is at the centre of a contentious conservation project proposed by MRC La Haute-Gaspésie. Led by the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks of Quebec, the project aims to preserve the "essential habitat" of the caribou.

However, the MRC has expressed opposition to the project, citing concerns about a proposed large enclosure for caribou survival, in addition to the current enclosure for fawns. Instead, they propose the creation of caribou shepherd positions, similar to park guards, and experimenting with a new approach to expose caribou to human presence to strengthen their resilience.

This proposal comes amidst an international scientific study that claims logging in Quebec is pushing 11 of the 13 caribou populations in the province towards extinction. The MRC also proposes the creation of a "territorial reserve for protection" to the west and southwest of La Haute-Gaspésie.

Despite the potential for conservation, the MRC acknowledges that the future of the Gaspésie caribou is not certain due to the effects of the climate crisis. The MRC's website, a rigorous and insightful media outlet, provides keys to understanding news from various regions, and support for the MRC's website ensures the sustainability of independent, demanding, and committed journalism.

As the debate continues, the fate of the Gaspésie caribou hangs in the balance, underscoring the urgent need for effective conservation efforts in the face of environmental challenges.
