Guidelines for Safely Tow an Electric Vehicle: Essential Strategies and Practices

In the ever-evolving world of automotive technology, electric cars have become a popular choice for many. However, when it comes to transporting these vehicles, especially in the event of a breakdown, it's essential to follow specific guidelines to avoid potential damage.

The Auto Club Europa (ACE) advises against self-towing electric cars and always recommends hiring professionals. This is because recharging by towing is not recommended and can cause damage to the vehicle. Instead, assistance can be sought from various sources. Manufacturers like Volkswagen, providers such as eTree, and automobile clubs like ADAC, ACE, or AvD offer mobility guarantees. In addition, motor vehicle insurance protection policies may also provide coverage for towing services.

When calling for assistance, it's crucial to specify that it's an electric vehicle to ensure an appropriately equipped vehicle is dispatched. If an electric car breaks down due to an empty drive battery and the on-board electronics can no longer be switched on, it should not be moved on its own wheels, except for a few meters at walking speed.

Towing an electric car requires careful consideration. Some vehicles, like the VW ID.3, allow towing up to 50 km/h and a maximum of 50 km distance with the ignition on and the gear selector in "N". However, in most cases, electric cars can only be towed under certain conditions to avoid damage. When towed, the electric motor acts as a dynamo and generates induced voltage, which can lead to defects.

To prevent uncontrolled power generation, all four wheels should be on the transport surface. When a tow truck loads the vehicle onto the bed, it can do so with a crane or winch, or lift it onto the bed by the wheels (Wheel-Lift), provided it's not an electric car with all-wheel drive.

Projects like ADAC's "Mobile Charging" in cooperation with Hyundai exist, but are regionally limited. Manufacturers like Volkswagen are also working on mobile charging solutions. However, in emergencies, charging on site or transport with a recovery vehicle is the only option.

It's important to note that ignoring the manufacturer's guidelines for towing an electric car may result in damage not covered by the warranty or insurance. Most manufacturers prohibit classic towing with a rope or strap, and guidelines can be found in the vehicle's manual.

In conclusion, when dealing with a breakdown of an electric car, safety should be the top priority. Always contact a professional towing service, follow the manufacturer's guidelines, and ensure the vehicle is loaded correctly onto the tow truck to avoid any potential damage.
