Kuwait Hosts 11th Meeting of GCC Ministers of Social Affairs and Development
Kuwait played host to the 11th meeting of GCC Ministers of Social Affairs and Development, with Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaila, Kuwait's Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood Affairs, presiding over the gathering. The event, which took place recently, was marked by a strong commitment to strengthening cooperation among GCC states for social development.
Dr. Al-Huwaila expressed her appreciation for the active participation of the ministers in strengthening Gulf joint action. She highlighted key achievements, including the adoption of the GCC anti-drug strategy (2025-2028) during the 55th session of the Supreme Council in Kuwait in 2014.
The agenda for the meeting was comprehensive, covering various topics such as the 2025-2028 anti-drug strategy, the committee's 2020-2030 work plan and initiatives, the 2025-2030 joint charitable and humanitarian plan, and the 2026-2030 joint volunteer work plan.
The meeting also addressed the importance of strengthening social cohesion, developing social protection systems, addressing drug and alcohol misuse, and children's issues in light of technological and AI transformations. Dr. Al-Huwaila praised the GCC General Secretariat for supporting the committee's work and the efforts of the Executive Bureau of GCC Ministers of Labor and Social Affairs.
GCC Secretary General Jasem Al-Budaiwi stated that the meeting reinforces joint social action and deepens Gulf integration. He noted that GCC states scored above the global average in the 2025 Social Progress Index, a testament to the region's commitment to social development.
Al-Budaiwi also expressed confidence that the meeting's outcomes would further advance Gulf social cooperation. He mentioned the Bahraini government's April 2022 youth initiative as a key achievement, with Bahrain hosting the “Global Initiatives Supporting Youth: Opportunities and Challenges” workshop as part of the “Global Network Supporting Youth Competitiveness” or “Hope Network,” emphasizing youth empowerment and their role in sustainable development.
Dr. Al-Huwaila concluded the meeting by expressing hope that the deliberations would yield practical recommendations enhancing Gulf social cooperation and meeting people's aspirations. She congratulated attendees on the Prophet's birthday, wishing them peace and blessings.
