In a recent report published by Ovum, analyst Evan Kirchheimer has classified most multinational corporations as either 'early' or 'adolescent' cloud adopters. The report, which surveyed 102 multinational corporations with at least 10,000 employees, found that nearly 50% of these corporations are currently using cloud computing services.

The report predicts that these corporations will become 'mature' cloud adopters, using cloud as the primary delivery method for various workloads, after three IT contract cycles, which is between 6 and 10 years. At present, the current average cloud adoption rate among multinational companies in Europe stands at 42 percent, an increase from last year's 28 percent.

Greater adoption of cloud services is contingent upon the resolution of security, governance, and reliability issues. The report highlights that financial organizations prefer to base their internal IT systems on cloud services but are cautious about shared networking services. On the other hand, manufacturing companies show a strong interest in using cloud-based networking and data management services.

Interestingly, the report found that cloud adoption was especially high among companies based in the Asia/Pacific region. This trend is significant as it indicates a shift towards cloud-based solutions in regions where digital transformation is rapidly advancing.

The report also emphasizes that the adoption rate among European organizations was below the 45% average. This finding underscores the need for European corporations to address the aforementioned issues to fully leverage the benefits of cloud computing.

In conclusion, the report by Ovum provides valuable insights into the current state and future trajectory of cloud adoption among multinational corporations. As more corporations transition to mature cloud adopters, the impact on the global IT landscape is expected to be significant.
