Half of the population advocates for stricter regulations on food waste practices.

In a recent poll conducted by Forsa, commissioned by the RTL media group, it was revealed that a majority of Germans (54%) are in favour of stricter laws to combat food waste. The survey, which was carried out from August 14 to 17, 2020, involved 1,001 participants.

The poll found that higher education levels are associated with a higher likelihood of favouring stricter laws. 57% of A-levels/studies holders and 52% of intermediate school graduates support stricter laws. On the other hand, those aged 45 and over and those with primary school education are more likely to believe that Germany should continue to rely solely on education and voluntary measures. 51% and 55% of these groups, respectively, hold this view.

The poll also highlighted the party affiliations of those in favour of stricter laws. A significant majority of supporters of the Greens (70%) and the Left Party (65%) favour stricter laws. The CDU and the AfD, however, have a higher proportion of supporters who believe that Germany should continue to rely solely on education and voluntary measures. 52% of CDU supporters and 56% of AfD supporters hold this view, but it's important to note that at the time of the survey, there was no direct information available on the opinion of CDU supporters regarding the fight against food waste.

The poll results also showed a generational divide in the support for stricter laws. A majority of respondents under 45 years old favour stricter laws. 67% of 18-29 year-olds and 64% of 30-44 year-olds are in favour, compared to 51% and 55% of those aged 45 and over.

The poll results underscore the public's concern about food waste and the desire for more stringent measures to address the issue. As the debate on food waste continues, these findings provide valuable insights into the opinions of the German population.
