Man on Hunger Strike Protests Deportation and Detention Conditions

Hamza Avşar, a 48-year-old man, remains seated in the visitor's room of the Dresden detention center, his gaunt face a stark contrast to his clothing, which are too large for his current weight. Avşar has been on a hunger strike since mid-June, only consuming sweetened water, tea, and coffee.

Avşar's physical condition remains weak, and he continues to express concern about his health, stating, "I'm aware that I might die here." His sleep pattern is disrupted, despite taking sleeping pills, and he experiences difficulty sleeping at night. Memory lapses persist, with Avşar forgetting thoughts from one moment to the next.

Avşar is protesting against his scheduled deportation to Turkey and the conditions in the detention center. His lawyer in Turkey, who previously represented him in a political case, has confirmed his legal representation and the risk of renewed political persecution if he returns to Turkey.

Despite the brief interruption in his hunger strike, Avşar has resumed his protest. His clothes, the jeans in particular, continue to be too large for his current weight. The conditions in the detention center and the threat of deportation to Turkey remain a source of continued anxiety for Avşar.

The Dresden detention center has been under scrutiny for its treatment of detainees, with concerns raised about the conditions and the potential for political persecution upon deportation. Avşar's case serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those seeking asylum and the importance of upholding human rights.
