Hannover-Misburg Operation Concludes: Successful Elimination of Military Personnel in Hannover
In an operation that required the collaboration of numerous emergency services and the cooperation of the citizens, a World War II bomb was successfully defused in the Hannover district of Misburg-South on Monday.
The incident unfolded when exploratory work on a property on Anderter Straße revealed a bomb crater at the bottom of a water-filled retention basin about 2 meters deep. The identified bomb was a British 500-pound bomb from World War II, equipped with an impact fuse.
Upon discovery, a security zone with a radius of 1,000 meters was established around the find. A total of 336 emergency service personnel from the fire department, aid organizations, police, and the Lower Saxony Bomb Disposal Service (KBD) were involved in the operation.
At 4:30 PM, around 3,350 people from the affected district were asked to leave the evacuation area. The clearance forces reported safety in the evacuation area at 6:57 PM, allowing experts from the bomb disposal service to begin their work. The bomb was successfully defused by a diver from the KBD at 7:43 PM.
Dr. Axel von der Ohe, Hannover's fire department head of department, and Gregor Fleischmann, deputy head of the fire department, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the measures. They highlighted the professional work of the emergency services and the cooperation of the citizens of the district.
Around 150 evacuees sought shelter at the care center set up at the Pestalozzi School in Eisteichweg. The security zone was lifted at 8:25 PM, allowing all residents affected by the evacuation to return to their homes.
Gregor Fleischmann acknowledged the challenges presented by the bomb's location in water and expressed gratitude for the quick completion of measures without injuries. The citizen's phone received 101 calls by 8:25 PM, reflecting the community's concern and interest in the situation.
