Health Minister Luc Boileau's position is assumed by Caroline Quach-Thanh
Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh has been appointed as the new national director of public health in Quebec, effective from September 29, 2021. The announcement was made by Fanny Lévesque, who also revealed that Dr. Quach-Thanh will serve as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
Dr. Quach-Thanh's appointment comes after Dr. Luc Boileau's term as national director of public health ended prematurely. Originally set to expire in 2026, Dr. Boileau's tenure was cut short, and the reasons for his early departure remain unknown.
Dr. Quach-Thanh, a full professor in the departments of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Immunology, and Pediatrics at the University of Montreal, gained public recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to her new role, she was a consultant physician at the Quebec National Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) in the Biological Risks Division.
Dr. Boileau's term as interim director began after the resignation of Dr. Horacio Arruda, and he was officially appointed for a four-year term in June 2022. However, earlier this summer, Dr. Boileau requested that his term be shortened, and he eventually resigned due to health reasons.
Christian Dubé, Minister of Health, expressed gratitude towards Dr. Boileau for his work, particularly during the pandemic and in the development of the first national prevention strategy in health. He praised Dr. Quach-Thanh's expertise and experience, calling her the ideal candidate for the important position in Quebec.
However, Dr. Quach-Thanh's appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead Public Health in Quebec.
As of now, Dr. Boileau's successor has not been officially announced. The public awaits further information on who will take on the responsibility of guiding Quebec's public health strategy in the coming years.
