Heavy Rainfall in Munich - Visuals Portray Torrential Downpours
In a series of updates, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Munich and its surrounding areas. The warning, initially issued on August 20, has been extended until 19:00.
The warning level three also applies to Fürstenfeldbruck and Starnberg. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities during this period.
The DWD first predicted isolated thunderstorms in Munich, with heavy rain of up to 20 liters per square meter in a short period, occasionally up to 30 liters per square meter, and gusts of wind up to 50 km/h.
By 15:33, the DWD was warning of "strong thunderstorms" in Munich and the region, with possible rainfall of 15 to 25 liters per square meter and hail. The possible rainfall in Munich could reach up to 40 liters per square meter. Hail is also a possibility in the storms.
Heavy rain showers hit the Munich district particularly hard, causing some streets in Unterhaching to flood. The fire department had to intervene due to the flooding.
Update, 15:58, saw the DWD issuing a "severe thunderstorm warning" for the western and northwestern parts of Munich until 17:00. By 16:22, thunderstorm cells were approaching from the east, from Ottobrunn to Erding, and are expected to reach Munich, bringing heavy rain with possible hourly rainfall of up to 10 liters.
While it is expected to remain mostly cloudy in Munich, the rest of Bavaria can look forward to a pleasant mix of sun and clouds. However, cities near Munich that might suffer from heavy rain on Thursday include areas in southern Bavaria around Munich, especially near the Alps, with moderate to heavy rain and possible thunderstorms expected.
On Thursday, it will be rainy and cloudy, with temperatures dropping. Towards the end of the week, the weather situation is expected to improve gradually, with temperatures in Munich remaining below 20 degrees. The DWD expects the rain to subside at the Alps by Friday.
Despite the warnings, the south of Bavaria is faced with umbrellas and thunderstorm warnings, while the north and east of Bavaria will remain mainly sunny, with only a few clouds in the sky.
The exact time of the thunderstorms in Munich remains to be seen, but they are expected to hit the city by Thursday. The DWD has eased the warning for Munich, but the storm is not over yet. A level two warning is in effect until 20:00. The DWD has lifted the thunderstorm warning for Munich at 20:00.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather updates and to take necessary precautions during this period.
