Heavy vehicles prohibited from crossing over suspension bridge.
The Hanging Bridge in Passau, a vital part of the city's traffic network, will undergo a recalculation of its load-bearing capacity in the coming months. This assessment, commissioned to an engineering firm, aims to reclassify the bridge into a higher load class, with the interim results available from August 1, 2025.
Since March 1, 2025, buses with a permissible total weight of more than 16 tons have been barred from crossing the Hanging Bridge. This closure is not due to the bridge's current condition but for long-term preservation.
The total of 73 bridges, including the 4 major bridges, play a crucial role in Passau's traffic network. These bridges are inspected annually for any defects, with more comprehensive inspections occurring every 3 or 6 years.
During the Hanging Bridge closure, affected buses will now traverse the Schanzl bridge and the Anger street. This change affects city bus lines 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as lines 6101, 6102, 6103, 6130, 6131, 6134, 6135, 6226, 6380, 7599, and the night express of the RBO.
The Passau Public Transport Company GmbH has announced changes in line traffic in the Fritz-Schaeffer-Promenade during the Hanging Bridge closure. Line K2 will depart from the ZOB towards Sieglberg/Sieglgut from 8:15 AM to 6:15 PM at a 2-hour interval, and inbound from 6:45 AM and then from 8:30 AM to 6:35 PM at a 2-hour interval. Line K3 will operate from the ZOB towards Sulzsteg/Am Högl from 7:45 AM to 5:45 PM at a 2-hour interval, and inbound from 8:05 AM to 6:05 PM also at a 2-hour interval.
CityBus service from Parkhaus Bahnhofstraße to Römerplatz will operate from 6:30 AM to 9:45 AM and 1:45 PM to 5:45 PM. The stops "Suspension Bridge" (for RBO buses) and "Ilz Bridge/Near Salvator Church" (for city buses) will be served in the city direction.
It is important to note that the current closure of the Hanging Bridge is not a new development, as the bridge has been subject to a weight restriction for vehicles over 16 tons for decades. However, the problem with buses was not present in its current form until now.
The Hanging Bridge was reopened for traffic in 2018 after extensive renovation for a total cost of 4.3 million euros. The website for the interim result of the recalculation can be found on the Stadtwerke Passau's website.
Despite the closure, the city bus will continue unchanged. Short stopping possibilities exist at the Bschütt parking garage for "parent taxis". Buses will no longer stop at the Suspension Bridge stop in the city outskirts at the Anger.
For the most up-to-date departure times, passengers are advised to visit the Stadtwerke Passau's website. The K-lines of the Verkehrsbetriebsgesellschaft Passau GmbH and the shuttle bus to the Veste Oberhaus will continue to run in both directions via the old town and suspension bridge.
