Hidden Stash of Marijuana Valued at over Two Million Euros Discovered in a Spanish Refrigerated Truck, Containing over 200 Kilograms of Illicit Substance

In a significant development, the Braunschweig Main Customs Office is investigating a suspected case of commercial smuggling of marijuana. The law enforcement agencies involved in this case include the Hildesheim Autobahnpolicei and the Technical Relief Agency from Northeim.

The investigation was initiated following the discovery of over 200 kilograms of marijuana on Saturday afternoon in Seesen. The marijuana was found hidden in the refrigerated trailer of a Spanish truck at the Schwalenberg Ost rest area on the A7.

The search results did not provide information about which group found the marijuana. However, the substance was secured and transported away with the help of forces from the Hildesheim Autobahnpolizei and the Technical Relief Agency from Northeim.

Before 2024, all cannabis products were under the Narcotics Act. However, the law on handling consumer cannabis, which came into force in 2024, replaced the previous law governing all cannabis products, including marijuana. Since 2024, cannabis is not legal in general, and the import of cannabis remains prohibited and is punishable.

The suspected commercial smuggling is a particularly serious offense under the law. The 60-year-old Spanish driver, who was calm and cooperative during the investigation, is currently in custody. He is facing a prison sentence of three months to five years if found guilty.

Further investigations are being conducted by the Hannover Customs Investigation Office on behalf of the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor's Office. The marijuana has a street value of over two million euros.
