High-end Garmin Fenix 8 Pro watch merges smartwatch features with satellite capabilities

Garmin Introduces the Fenix 8 Pro: A Revolutionary Smartwatch with Integrated Satellite Technology

Garmin has unveiled the Fenix 8 Pro, a groundbreaking smartwatch that integrates their proven InReach satellite technology directly into the device. This innovative move makes the Fenix 8 Pro the first mainstream smartwatch to offer this level of satellite functionality integration.

The Fenix 8 Pro is not just a step forward for Garmin; it's a giant leap. Over the past decade, the Fenix series has evolved from a basic GPS outdoor watch to a multisport powerhouse. This latest addition continues this evolution, offering a host of new features and improvements.

The Fenix 8 Pro supports LTE-M, satellite messaging, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. Its communication system starts with your phone's data, escalates to LTE-M networks, and ultimately connects to satellites when off-grid. This ensures uninterrupted communication no matter where your adventures take you.

The Fenix 8 Pro's standout feature is its InReach technology. It allows for two-way text messages, voice calls through the Garmin Messenger app, and location check-ins via satellite when cellular coverage is unavailable. This makes it an ideal companion for outdoor enthusiasts who venture far from civilisation.

Garmin offers a monthly subscription plan for the InReach satellite communication service used with the Fenix 8 Pro watch. This subscription includes global LTE and satellite coverage for features like two-way messaging, voice calls, SOS alerts, and weather updates without requiring a phone.

The Fenix 8 Pro is available in two sizes: 47mm and 51mm, with the MicroLED option only available in 51mm. The MicroLED variant of the Fenix 8 Pro delivers 10 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, significantly less than the 27 days offered by the AMOLED versions. However, the MicroLED variant boasts the brightest smartwatch display ever created, with 4,500 nits and over 400,000 individual LEDs.

The Fenix 8 Pro's display technology promises superior off-angle viewing and eliminates burn-in concerns that plague AMOLED screens. It also features titanium bezels, sapphire lenses, and maintains 100m of water resistance. The addition of a speaker and microphone enables voice calling functionality.

All Fenix 8 Pro models will be available from September 8. InReach connectivity requires a $7.99 monthly subscription after a 30-day trial. The Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED is priced at $1,999, while the AMOLED versions start at $1,199 for the 47mm model and $1,299 for the 51mm model.

The Fenix 8 Pro is Garmin's first serious attempt at making their flagship watch truly standalone. This watch is more than just a timepiece; it's a comprehensive tool for outdoor enthusiasts, adventurers, and athletes alike. With its integrated InReach satellite technology, the Fenix 8 Pro is set to redefine what a smartwatch can do.
