High-speed Acela train from Amtrak revolutionizes travel for residents in the Northeast region
Leo Friedman and Phyllis embarked on a journey from New Jersey to D.C., marking their travel on the inaugural train north of the new Acela trains. These trains, part of Amtrak's NextGen Acela project, are set to revolutionise high-speed rail travel in America.
Elliot Hamlisch, Amtrak's chief commercial officer, hailed the NextGen Acela as "the future of high-speed rail in America and the most technologically-advanced train in the world." The new trains, which incorporate the best of what Europe has to offer in terms of high-speed rail technology, are operating between Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., reaching speeds of 160 miles per hour.
The new Acela trains are designed to lean into curves, allowing them to go faster. They are also equipped with upgraded seats, bigger windows, faster Wi-Fi, and ample charging power. One of the standout features is the self-serve food bar in the cafe car.
Amtrak's NextGen Acela high-speed trains first launched 25 years ago and doubled Amtrak's market share in the Northeast. The 28 new trains are expected to be in service by 2027, with assembly taking place in upstate New York.
Kris Van Cleave, our senior transportation correspondent based in Phoenix, Arizona, reported on the launch of the new trains. In addition to his role as a national correspondent reporting for all our News broadcasts and platforms, Kris also serves as the lead on transportation stories.
The new Acela trains are coming online as the Department of Transportation pledges $43 million to upgrade New York's Penn Station. This upgrade is part of a larger modernization effort, with Amtrak taking over the leadership of the modernization of Washington's Union Station as part of its funded projects to improve the Northeast Corridor infrastructure, as of November 2024.
The new Acela trains have a top speed that is 10 miles per hour faster than the older Acela trains. They can hold approximately 80 more passengers. The NextGen Acela trains are meeting new, stronger crashworthiness standards, guarding against jackknife-type derailments, ensuring the safety of passengers.
As the NextGen Acela trains continue to roll out, they promise to redefine rail travel in America, offering a faster, more comfortable, and technologically advanced experience for passengers.
