In the heart of Cebu City, Zenaida Jancinal, a flower farmer from Busay, has been selling her blooms at Freedom Park for the past 27 years. However, the Carbon Redevelopment Project forced a change of scenery for Zenaida and other vendors, as they were relocated to an interim building.

This temporary facility was designed to provide a home for businesses during the main market's reconstruction. Unfortunately, it has also become a hotspot for theft and robbery, as evidenced by a recent incident where a vendor lost cash and jewelry from the cash register.

Zenaida's daughter, Rho Ann, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 2018, took the reins of the online aspect of the business. She created a Facebook and Instagram page for their flower business, named Flowers by Mama Z, in 2021. The digital platform opened new opportunities, allowing Rho Ann to receive orders, process payments, and book deliveries.

The relocation to the interim building has brought about new challenges for the business. The higher frequency of theft and robbery in the area has affected their security. Rho Ann and Zenaida have expressed the need for increased police presence to ensure the safety of both the vendors and customers.

Despite these challenges, technology has been a beacon of hope for the business. It not only helped them adapt to the new environment but also brought in new clients. Rho Ann and Zenaida were featured in a StartUp Spotlight interview on the website, which further boosted their business.

The pandemic has also taken a toll on the flower sales at Freedom Park in Carbon Market. Many customers have opted for online orders due to safety concerns about the interim building. However, some customers still prefer the traditional way of shopping, visiting the market and personally selecting their blooms.

Despite the setbacks, Flowers by Mama Z continues to bloom, thanks to Rho Ann's passion for sales and the resilience of the family business. The interim building may not be ideal, but it has become a stepping stone towards a brighter future for Zenaida's flower business.
