High Volume of Asylum Seekers in Europe: Over 400,000 Applications in Six Months
In a recent report published by the European Asylum Support Office on Monday, September 8, it has been revealed that France, Spain, Germany, and Italy were the leaders in terms of asylum applications in the first half of 2025.
The report states that France received approximately 78,000 applications, Spain followed closely with 77,000, Germany saw 70,000 applications, and Italy received 64,000. This marks a shift from previous years, as Germany is no longer the European country with the most asylum seekers.
Interestingly, the majority of applicants (49,000) come from Venezuela, marking a significant change from the past decade where the majority of applicants were from Syria. It is worth noting that the specific number of applications from Venezuela in the report is not provided.
The decrease in asylum applications in Europe is attributed to the fall of the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. This event has led to a significant decrease in the number of asylum seekers from Syria.
The statistics in the report include data from all European Union countries, Norway, and Switzerland. In total, 399,000 applications were received in these 29 countries.
It is also noted that almost all Venezuelan applicants applied for asylum in Spain. This trend is not seen in the applications from other countries.
The number of new asylum applications in Europe significantly decreased in the first half of 2025, with around 400,000 applications submitted. This represents a 23% decrease from the same period in 2024.
The decrease was most significant in Germany (down 43%), Italy (down 25%), and Spain (down 13%), excluding France. These figures highlight the impact of the Syrian conflict on Europe's asylum landscape.
It is important to note that the United Kingdom is not included in the statistics due to its withdrawal from the EU.
This shift in asylum applications is a significant development in Europe's immigration landscape, and the report serves as a valuable resource for understanding these changes.
