Highlights of American Archives Month Employees - Profiling Corbin Apkin

In November 2015, Corbin Apkin began his journey as an archivist at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Prior to this role, he was part of the National Archives and Records Administration.

At the Kennedy Library, Corbin's responsibilities are wide-ranging. He answers emails, assists patrons with research, and spends time in the research room. His role involves managing and preserving a vast collection of historical materials, providing valuable insights to researchers and visitors alike.

Corbin's interest in history led him to pursue a career as an archivist. He finds the 1960s an intriguing time period and particularly enjoys working with materials from the Kennedy Presidency.

One of Corbin's most notable contributions has been updating the descriptions for audiovisual holdings to make them more accessible. This work ensures that these valuable resources continue to be a rich source of information for future generations.

In addition to his professional duties, Corbin has also shown a keen interest in the library's artifacts. He particularly favours the Mr. Zip artwork from the H. Bentley Hahn Personal Papers. The artwork, which represents the implementation of the Zip Code system, appeals to him for its historical significance and the charm of the character.

During his internship at the library in 2014, Corbin made a fascinating discovery—a telegram sent by his uncle to the President inviting him to an event. This personal connection to the Kennedy Presidency adds an extra layer of interest to his work.

When asked about a hypothetical dinner with the President of his library, Corbin suggests a trip to Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He cites the restaurant's proximity to Harvard and his fondness for the establishment as reasons for his choice.

Corbin's favourite fact about John F. Kennedy is his connection to the Omni Parker House hotel in Boston. This historic hotel holds a special place in the Kennedy family's history, and Corbin finds this fact both interesting and poignant.

Corbin encourages visits to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. He believes that a visit offers a comprehensive understanding of the Kennedy Presidency and his life, with its museum, archival research facilities, beautiful building, and ocean view. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a fascinating day out, the library is a must-visit destination.
