Wildfires in Galicia Continue to Rage, Stabilization Reported in Some Areas
A series of wildfires are currently ravaging parts of Galicia, with several active blazes still not stabilized as of now. The fires in Carballeda de Valdeorras-Casaio (3,000 ha.), Carballedo-A Cova in Lugo province (50 ha.), and Vilaboa-Santa Cristina de Cobres in Pontevedra (60 ha.) continue to pose a significant threat.
Meanwhile, some progress has been made in other areas. The fires in Oímbra and Xinzo de Limia (17,000 ha.), Carballeda de Avia and Beade (4,000 ha.), Vilardevós-Vilar de Cervos (900 ha.), Vilardevós-Fumaces and A Trepa (100 ha.), Riós-Trasestrada (20 ha.), in Ourense, and Oia-Mougás (60 ha.), in Pontevedra, have been successfully stabilized.
The Larouco fire, which began on August 13 in the parish of Seadur, has been a particularly destructive force. It has burned through 30,000 hectares across Ourense and Lugo provinces. The exact position of the fire brigade, emergency forces, and equipment along the most precisely defined active fire front of the Larouco fire around 11:30 AM on the penultimate Sunday in August is not specifically detailed in the available sources. However, for the extinction of the Larouco fire, a massive effort has been undertaken, with 51 technicians, 222 agents, 311 brigades, 216 water trucks, 12 bulldozers, six technical support units, 14 helicopters, and 15 aircraft mobilized.
The village of San Vicente de Leira is fighting to rise from the ashes of the Larouco fire, which has also passed through the municipalities of O Barco de Valdeorras, O Bolo, Carballeda de Valdeorras, A Rúa, Petín, Rubiá, A Veiga, and Vilamartín de Valdeorras in Ourense, as well as Quiroga in Lugo.
Elsewhere, the fires in Agolada-O Sexo in Pontevedra have been extinguished, and the fire in A Mezquita-A Esculqueira has been stabilized, affecting 10,000 hectares. The fires in Montederramo-Paredes (120 ha.), Vilardevós-Moialde (600 ha.), and Maceda (3,500 ha.) have also been controlled.
However, the fires in Chandrexa de Queixa and Vilarinho remain active, with 19,000 hectares affected and a favorable evolution. Another active fire in Chandrexa de Queixa and Vilarinho has been reported, but no further details about its size or progression are provided.
The Military Emergency Unit (UME) personnel have also been mobilized for the firefighting efforts. The Situation 2 has been deactivated in Vilaboa-Santa Cristina de Cobres.
