Israeli Airstrike Targets Houthi Leadership in Yemen

In a significant development, the Israeli military confirmed an airstrike in Sanaa, Yemen, on Thursday. The target was a facility housing dozens of leading members of the Houthi regime.

The Houthi group, also known as Ansar Allah ("Supporters of God"), has been a dominant force in Yemen's ongoing civil war since 2014. They have been engaged in various activities, including attacking commercial ships and, at times, Israel itself. These activities, according to reports, have been ongoing since the start of the Gaza war.

The Houthi group's president and several top officials were reportedly killed in the airstrike. Ahmed al-Rahaui, who was appointed as president by the Houthi organization last year, was among the casualties. Al-Rahaui was seen as a symbolic figure with little real power.

Following al-Rahaui's death, Mohammed Ahmed was immediately appointed as acting president by the Houthi's highest political council. Ahmed, who previously served as vice president under al-Rahaui, was also appointed as acting prime minister.

The Houthis' stated aim is to support the Palestinians. In a statement, the Houthi government, which is not recognized internationally, announced that it will continue its work following the airstrike.

The Saba news agency, which is controlled by the Houthis, reported the appointment of Mohammed Ahmed as acting president. The agency also reported that several other members of the Houthi group were injured in the airstrike.

The Houthis have controlled Yemen's north for nearly a decade. Abdel Malik al-Huthi, the leader of the Houthi group, is the brother of its founder.

The Israeli military reported that al-Rahaui and other senior Houthi officials were killed in the airstrike. The Israeli military stated that the airstrike was conducted to prevent the Houthi group from further threatening regional and international peace.

The Houthi government has not yet responded to the Israeli military's statement. However, the Houthi's stated aim of supporting the Palestinians suggests that tensions between the two groups may escalate further.

This is a developing story and more information will be released as it becomes available.
