Houthi Leading Politician Ends Life Following Israeli Airstrike

In the ongoing conflict in Yemen, the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah ("Supporters of God"), remain the strongest force. On Thursday, the Houthis experienced a significant loss as their president, Abdel Malik al-Huthi's brother, Ahmed al-Rahaui, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Sanaa, Yemen.

The Israeli military announced that al-Rahaui and other high-ranking Houthi representatives were targeted and killed in the airstrike. The attack also resulted in the deaths of several Houthi ministers, according to reports from the Iran-backed militia.

The target of the airstrike was a facility where "dozens" of leading members of the Houthi regime were present. Following al-Rahaui's death, the Houthi's highest political council appointed Mohammed Ahmed as acting prime minister. It is worth noting that Mohammed Ahmed previously served as al-Rahaui's deputy.

The current prime minister of the Houthi militia is now Mohammed Muftah, who had already taken over the prime minister's office unofficially and was now officially appointed as the interim prime minister. Al-Rahaui, who was appointed as prime minister by the Houthi organization a year ago, was seen as a largely symbolic figure with little real power.

The Houthi government, which has controlled the north of Yemen for nearly a decade, stated that it will continue its work following the attack. However, the Houthi militia has been repeatedly targeting commercial ships and sometimes Israel itself since the start of the Gaza war nearly two years ago. The Houthi government is not internationally recognized.

The Houthis have claimed to support the Palestinians in their actions. It is important to note that the Houthis are considered one of the main obstacles to peace in Yemen, where a civil war has been raging since 2014. The international community continues to call for a resolution to the conflict and an end to the suffering of the Yemeni people.
